Sebastian Vettel diz que o seu choque pelo desaparecimento de Charlie Whiting foi intensificado pelo facto de ter participado numa inspeção à pista com o diretor de corrida na Fórmula 1 na passada quarta-feira.
O alemão e os restantes pilotos da Fórmula 1 mantinham uma relação próxima com uma das principais figuras do campeonato, pelo que é natural que a conferência de imprensa de antevisão do Grande Prémio da Austrália tenha ficado marcada pelas reações a uma notícia que colocou o desporto de luto.
“Penso que fiquei tão chocado como todos nós ainda estamos agora”, começou por dizer Vettel. “Especialmente porque falei com ele ontem e percorremos as primeiras curvas da pista juntos. É difícil entender quando alguém já não está lá.”
“Conheço-o há muito tempo e ele tem sido a figura principal para os pilotos. Obviamente há regulamentos e tudo isso, mas ele era o intermediário.”
“Se alguém perguntasse alguma coisa a qualquer momento, a sua porta estava sempre aberta. Ele era um apaixonado pelas corridas e um homem muito bom.”
Robert Kubica, que regressa este ano à Fórmula 1, também se cruzou com Charlie Whiting em pista mas afirma que optou por não interromper a conversa que o britânico estava a ter com Vettel, já que esperava que todos se encontrassem no briefing de pilotos desta sexta-feira.
“É um momento difícil”, disse o piloto polaco. “Vi o Sebastian a andar com o Charlie ontem. Pensei que não os devia interromper porque estaríamos juntos no briefing de pilotos, o que não acontecerá. É muito triste.”
“Ele era uma espécie de ícone na Fórmula 1 e não só. Ele mantinha todos dentro dos regulamentos e era o tipo de pessoa em que podias sempre confiar. É um momento muito triste.”
Max Verstappen encontrou-se recentemente com Whiting num evento da FIA e aproveitou para lembrar que o seu desaparecimento é a prova da necessidade de apreciar cada dia.
“Foi um grande choque porque passei um dia com ele em Genebra e estivemos a falar sobre muitas coisas”, disse o piloto da Red Bull. “Quando saí, disse-lhe que nos víamos na Austrália para mais uma temporada, por isso é inacreditável ouvir esta notícia.”
“É preciso apreciar cada dia e aproveitar a vida. Não se trata apenas de Fórmula 1, há outras coisas na vida. Neste momento, o mais importante é que os nossos pensamentos estejam com a família e amigos.”
Lewis Hamilton, campeão do mundo em título, acrescentou: “Fiquei incrivelmente chocado por ouvir esta triste notícia e os meus pensamentos estão com a sua família.”
“Aquilo que ele fez pelo desporto e o seu empenho fazem dele um pilar, como o Toto [Wolff] disse. É uma figura icónica do mundo do desporto. Que descanse em paz.”
